The University of South Carolina will break ground on the site of its new School of Medicine Columbia this week.

The university says the facility will redefine the future of health care education and research. Construction begins officially during the 3 p.m. ceremony Thursday, Jan. 23, at the USC Health Sciences Campus in the BullStreet District, 2700 block of Colonial Drive, according to an announcement from USC.

This 315,000-square-foot medical education and research facility will be part of USC’s $300 million Health Sciences Campus in the city of Columbia’s reimagined BullStreet District.

An opening welcome will be delivered by School of Medicine Columbia Interim Dean Dr. Gerald Harmon and USC President Michael Amiridis.

Scheduled speakers include Gov. Henry McMaster, South Carolina Senate President Thomas Alexander, South Carolina House of Representatives Speaker Murrell Smith and USC Board Chair Thad Westbrook.

Construction is expected to be complete in August 2027, according to the announcement.

Plans for the 16-acre site include four additional buildings.
