COLUMBIA, SC – DESA, Inc. is pleased to announce that Olivia Wilson has joined its Engineering Services team as Engineering Associate.

Wilson is the first graduate of South Carolina State University’s newly established Civil Engineering program. She took a nontraditional path of civil engineering, getting her start while serving in the South Carolina Air National Guard. Wilson was an Engineering Assistant in the 169th Civil Engineering Squadron for 10 years, where she specialized in GIS analysis and map requests, conducted GPS surveys, and performed Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) tasks to support design engineering.

She continued her studies by simultaneously studying to obtain associate degrees in Applied Science in Construction Technology and Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology.

Prior to leaving the military and working full-time, Wilson returned to school to obtain her bachelor’s degree. Determined to attend an HBCU, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, she applied and was accepted at South Carolina State University, which was launching its Civil Engineering program. When she graduated in May 2022, Wilson made history as the first graduate of South Carolina State’s Civil Engineering program.

Prior to DESA, Wilson was an engineering technician at Richland County New Development and South Carolina Air National Guard, and an engineering inspector for Richland County Penny Tax program. She is currently seeking a master’s degree in transportation.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Olivia on the DESA team. Her experience adds a new skillset to our team, which may lead to exciting opportunities in the future,” says Diane Sumpter, President and CEO.

A native of Sumter, Wilson graduated from Lakewood High School. She has one son, Judah.
